History of the Breed

The Murray Grey breed originated in Australia, in the upper Murray valley, on the New South Wales and Victorian Border. The first Murray Grey calf's were born at the Sutherland family's Thologolong property in 1905. Being the first of their breed in a Black Angus herd, they were bred by chance. The breed had a humble beginning, but soon became apparent to the surrounding cattlemen that these cattle grew quickly, were superior converts, and possessed carcase merit. Local cattlemen were so attracted by the breed's size and appearance that they began developing the breed.

By the early 1960's several breeders were successfully breeding commercial Murray Grey cattle, and the Murray Grey Beef Cattle Society was formed to register the cattle and administer the breed.

Today the breed sill thrives with their genetics to produce marbled beef without excess subcutaneous or inter-muscular seam fat. The breed ranges in color from silver to black and are also noted to have a very docile temperament. From their Angus ancestors they inherited dark skin pigmentation and are not susceptible to skin or eye problems in severe climates and are adaptable in most climatic conditions.

The breed has become the most popular breed in Australia, and in most overseas markets.
